I believe you need to defend your ego against countless efforts to diminish it. Anti-ego ideologies often equivocate between egoism and narcissism and treat both concepts as if they were the same. The proponents of “anti-ego” do not like to witness a person expressing pride and self-regard. “Who does he think he is?” they ask. Everywhere we go, the ego is under attack. Reverent Graham says man is a sinner. C. S. Lewis wrote that pride is an evil idea. Everywhere we go we are told to emulate Jesus on the cross as the suffering savior. Having an ego is the one thing we are not supposed to do. Defending our ego, standing up for ourselves, is a crime and a cause for hatred from others.
